THE SEVEN “I AM” STATEMENTS OF JESUS:
John 6:35-48
35 Then
Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go
hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. 36 But as I told you,
you have seen me and still you do not believe. 37 All those the Father gives me
will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. 38 For I have
come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me.
39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those
he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. 40 For my Father’s will is
that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life,
and I will raise them up at the last day.”
41 At this
the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that
came down from heaven.” 42 They said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph,
whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I came down from
heaven’?”
43 “Stop
grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus answered. 44 “No one can come to me unless
the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day. 45
It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’[d] Everyone
who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me. 46 No one has seen
the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father. 47 Very
truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life. 48 I am the bread of
life.
John 8:2-12
2 At dawn he
appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him,
and he sat down to teach them. 3 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees
brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group 4
and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5 In
the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” 6 They
were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him.
But Jesus
bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. 7 When they kept
on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you
who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8 Again he stooped
down and wrote on the ground.
9 At this,
those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until
only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. 10 Jesus straightened
up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”
11 “No one,
sir,” she said.
“Then
neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”
12 When
Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever
follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
John 10:7-14
7 Therefore
Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. 8 All
who have come before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not
listened to them. 9 I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved.[a]
They will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to
steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to
the full.
11 “I am the
good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 The hired
hand is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep. So when he sees the wolf
coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock
and scatters it. 13 The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares
nothing for the sheep.
14 “I am the
good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me—
John 11:25-26
25 Jesus
said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will
live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing in me will never
die. Do you believe this?”
John 14:6-7
6 Jesus
answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father
except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know[b] my Father as well.
From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”
John 15:1-8
The Vine and the Branches
1 “I am the
true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that
bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes[a] so that it
will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have
spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear
fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless
you remain in me.
5 “I am the
vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear
much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If you do not remain in me, you
are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up,
thrown into the fire and burned. 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in
you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 This is to my
Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.
